The regulator’s published position

The National Gambling Board says online gambling is prohibited in South Africa except online betting through bookmakers licensed in South Africa, including sports and horseracing. Its FAQ says online betting is legal with a licensed bookmaker and that interactive online gambling is not authorised under section 11. These are the NGB’s public statements checked on 21 October 2026.

Provincial licensing authorities issue and monitor licences, with national oversight. The NGB verified-operator portal publishes provincial data and should be checked live.

A brand can show different product categories

An operator can publish sports, casino-style games, live streams and account tools on one domain. Shared branding does not establish that every activity is authorised under a bookmaker licence. Identify the specific activity, company, regulator and licence type.

This is general information, not legal advice. Consult regulators or a South African lawyer for a definitive view.

Verify an operator

Find the legal entity, category and province in the NGB register. Confirm the issuing provincial authority’s record, then compare it with the licence details on the live operator site. Check whether the intended activity falls within that licence.

If information is ambiguous, contact the authority. Save the date and URL of the record you checked.
